Project: Technicians: The David Sainsbury Gallery at the Science Museum, London
Client: Gatsby Charitable Foundation
Project Duration: 4.5 years
Technicians is an interactive gallery for 11-16 year olds that explores technicians and technical occupations. My client was the gallery funder, Gatsby Charitable Foundation, who are the UK’s leading experts in this area, but had not funded an exhibition project before. My work enabled Gatsby to feel confident in its discussions with the Museum throughout the process, and ensured the gallery met their expectations. My role included:
- Capacity building: I supported Gatsby to understand the processes of gallery development at each RIBA stage.
- Relationship management: I ensured smooth communication and understanding between Gatsby and the Science Museum at all stages of the project, and particularly at the key reporting stages.
- Project development oversight: I was a member of the project steering group and attended monthly project progress meetings, I supported the Museum in writing the design tender, gave direction on the project programme and budget, and had oversight of project progress and key governance issues.
- Content and design oversight: I was a critical friend to the Science Museum and designers, helping them to understand the nuances of technical occupations, and ensure this was reflected in the content themes, exhibits and design.
